Our Classroom

Welcome to our class!  I am looking forward to an amazing and productive year with you.  We will be working hard over this school year to prepare you for your 8th grade year.  I believe that we will all have complete success! The first step is to come to class prepared and ready to work every day.  The information below will assist you in being successful in our class.

EXPECTATIONS

  • Be respectful and treat others the way you want to be treated.

  • Work hard and always do your best.

  • Be prepared, on task, and finish your work on time.

  • Follow all DSMS school rules.

DAILY SUPPLIES

  • #2 pencils, and pens with blue or black ink.

  • Loose leaf notebook paper

  • 1/2 inch binder with 5 tab dividers (left in the classroom)

MAKE-UP WORK

It is your responsibility to get make-up work if you have been absent from school.  Make-up assignments are located in labeled pockets on the wall by the binder shelf.  Class time will not be used to make up tests or assignments.  If you miss a test or miss turning in an assignment due to absence, you will still be expected to take the test and turn in the assignment. You have the number of days missed to make-up work.

HOMEWORK POLICY

Homework reinforces skills learned in class, provides an opportunity to complete long term assignments in small chunks, and allows students to complete work started at school or to prepare for an upcoming lesson. In addition, students will need to spend some time reading at home. Since reading and writing rates vary greatly among seventh-graders, homework time is hard to predict. If students use their class time and study hall period wisely, they should not need to spend an inordinate amount of time (on the average) each night on language arts activities.

GRADING FORMULA

There will be two types of grades taken: formative and summative. Formative grades include homework, daily work, and pop quizzes. Summative grades include tests, quizzes, projects, presentations, and final writing assignments. The grade weighting formula is 70% for summative , and 30% for formative.

LATE WORK/CORRECTION AND RETEST POLICY

Late Work

  • Formative: Students have a two day window to turn in late work for a maximum grade of 70 (the 2 day window includes the day between A and B days. The late work will be due the next time you return to class). After the two day window, the grade will be a zero.

  • Summative: Students have a one day window to turn in late work for a maximum grade of 70. After the one day window, the grade will be a zero.

Correction and Retesting Policy

  • Formative Work: Students will have an opportunity to correct for a new grade, but they will be required to attend tutorials for a mini-lesson first.

  • Summative Quizzes and Tests: Students have the opportunity to correct and retest for a grade of 70 within one week of receiving the failing grade. Projects, presentations, or final products will not be corrected for a new grade.

  • Final Exams: Students have no opportunity to correct for a new grade.

***CLASSROOM PROCEDURES

ENTERING THE CLASSROOM-I will greet you at the door each day inviting you into the classroom.

  • In the event that I am not at the door, please wait quietly outside the door, against the wall, in a straight line and wait for me to greet you.

  • After entering the classroom, get your binder from the shelf, sharpen your pencil, and begin working on the journal topic or warm-up for the day.

  • Do not enter the classroom unless you are ready to get to work.

RESTROOM BREAKS

Please use the restroom before coming to class.  If you need to use the restroom, do not interrupt instruction time unless it is an emergency.

CLASS DISMISSAL – Class is not over until I dismiss it.  Do not pack up your belongings until I have given you permission to do so.  I will dismiss class when all students are in their seats and quiet.
